MSIG Vietnam joins hands to support Lam Dong farmers to cope with climate change

To support farmers in coping with the intense heat wave and localized drought that is happening in the Southern region, MSIG Vietnam cooperated with Atlantic Commodities Vietnam Ltd. (ACOM), Hillridge Vietnam, and the Farmers Union of Di Linh and Lac Duong districts, Lam Dong province, organized Training on sustainable coffee production, livelihood development and regenerative agriculture in the framework of the JDE Peet's (JDE) Sustainable Development project.

Held on April 10 and 11, 2024 in Dung K’No commune (one of the most difficult communes of Lac Duong district) and Tan Lam commune (Di Linh district), the training program attracted the participation of a large number of farmers. The farmers have been provided with knowledge of sustainable coffee cultivation techniques, application of science and technology to production, and have been introduced to the product “Weather Index Insurance” – drought insurance provided by MSIG Vietnam.

Join hands to protect farmers through financial solutions
At the program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Phuong, Deputy General Director of MSIG Vietnam, said: "Coming from far away Japan, MSIG wants to bring advanced technologies and Japanese high-quality services to people, accompanying them to overcome the challenges that climate change causes to agriculture and particularly coffee growers in Vietnam, especially in remote areas such as Dung K’No commune and Tan Lam commune."

The heat wave in late March and early April this year severely affected coffee production in many main areas of Vietnam, causing many crops to wither due to water shortage. However, the farmers who attended the training program were more assured as being protected by MSIG Vietnam's Drought Insurance product, funded by JDE through ACOM, helping to minimize the financial burden for farmers.

Mr. Nguyen Nam Phuong, Business Development Manager of Hillridge Vietnam, also emphasized at the Training Program the importance of sustainable development for the Vietnam Coffee industry. He said: “Hillridge Vietnam believes that this is the key for the long-term development of the Vietnam Coffee industry, bringing benefits to farmers, communities, and the environment. We are committed to working closely with stakeholders for sustainable coffee production and development in Vietnam.”

Mr. Ko D.H. L., a representative of a household in Dung K’No commune said: "I am very happy to participate in this training program, where I learned a lot of useful knowledge about how to grow coffee effectively and protect crops from drought. I am eager to participate in similar programs in the future."

Although the understanding of the farmers about insurance and technology is still limited, with the enthusiastic cooperation of big names such as JDE, ACOM, Hillridge Vietnam, and MSIG Vietnam, they will become more resilient to overcome difficulties caused by climate change, gradually access to newer, better, more sustainable things that farmers in developed countries around the world have been enjoying.
